I hope this site is fairly active and maybe some that are active here have some ideas.
I have tried once in my town to get awareness going on our local and only pet shop in town , petland. The place is utterly horrid, small cages for any size dog, kittens, an your run of the mill critters from hamsters to rabbits etc.
the place stinks, it is amazing anyone even stays in there longer than 4 minutes from the smell to actually buy anything, it has been in my town for far too long, and is the last one standing.
For those on this website plenty in the vegan and animal activist world are far to familiar with puppy mills, but getting a city of any size in todays world to notice anything is the equivalent of having to do something so bizarre or illegal to get any attention. Which is probably why Petland in my town is still going because it is insignificant in the realm of eye popping news.
The problem I am facing is finding a way to get an actual news article / investigation by a journalist or anyone, in town to print an article in regards to puppy mills and their links to Petland, and how it is beneficial and better to adopt.
I have tried looking into contacting The Humane Society, but they offer very little resources on how to go about getting anything done in regards to getting a story printed. The last time I actually contacted my local paper to get a story going, as polite as the person was in conversing with, basically what I found out, they want to be spoon fed. The reporting has to be so blatantly obvious that all they have to do is, get out to location, take a picture, and then regurgitate what literally happened.
I was some what hopeful recently when our local news station had on their website a link to report something that you would like to see investigated, but that is the thing it is just an email link with nothing in regards to acknowledging that a human saw it.
So are there any NGOs around that can help provide information that would be compelling enough for someone at a newspaper office to want to print an article ? Or just ideas in general. The only other thing I might do one day is to actually purchase a billboard rental for a month or so or bus stop advertising space or even purchase advertising space in the news paper to advocate an end to shopping at Petland, etc, and to adopt and not shop.
I will keep an eye on this thread for any replies and thanks to anyone has any input in advance.
