I haven't read the whole thing but wow! I had thought about the matter before and wondered how the animals felt about participating in such things, but I thought it probably wasn't much different from having babies participate in movies or TV shows. But I didn't realize what danger the animals are often put in. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but I still thought the American Humane Association was better than this. You practically have to have gun to everyone's head to make sure lots of people won't try to get away with so much for so little reason.
It's so frustrating trying to find movies without animals in them... you pick something out, thinking 'oh, this has nothing to do with animals, this one should be okay!', and then halfway through the movie they just throw out some sort of terrified wild animal in a 20 second scene as a totally unnecessary gag. :/
I remember watching Life of Pi thinking "This CGI is amazing! There's really no reason to use animals in this day and age." only to find out later that they did use real animals in some scenes, nearly drowning several of them in the process. What was even the point if the CGI was so good you can't tell the difference anyway??? Ugh. It especially sucks as someone with a soft-spot for animal-related films... (The new Jungle Book reboot wasn't especially great as a film, but the CGI was a treat to look at. Hopefully more movies will start moving in that direction...)
At any rate, it makes me feel a bit less guilty about watching my movies for free. Try before you buy, baby...
American Humane is only half true. It's an American company. The rest is baloney. And vegans know how vile baloney is! This organization is excellent at one thing, however...rubber-stamping anything the studios want.
I went to see "Cowboys & Aliens" several years ago. I was stupid for going to see it, but a friend was in it and I wanted to support his very new acting career. As the movie began, I sat there asking myself what the hell I was thinking... COWBOYS, you idiot! ::sigh:: Sometimes we just don't think things through...
Point is, we all need reminders or refresher courses now and then. There's so much going on in the world that we can easily forget things. It's a bit like -- or maybe exactly like -- disaster fatigue. So we support each other and do our best in our unique situations and keep on keepin' on.
Reminds me of when my boyfriend and I bought tickets for a kids film and then sneaked into see a 18. Hard Candy was the film I think. I was 17 at the time hence the sneaking in instead of buying tickets for it specifically.

Lomedin: Learned by chance that Kat Von D is vegan. Didn't have a clue who she was before.

Vegan: I'm on an antinatilist group and only found out about her on that. Had no idea who she was before as never heard of her.

cybernaut: Well, it can be a little hard for me to come here sometimes because of how negative things can get here. I realize there's much to be negative about, but it's still hard for me all the same.
