I'm struggling to cope with the dogs' behaviour as of late. In the past few months he has increasingly become very vocal, be it barking or whinging non stop. He is about 13/14. He never used to be like this in previous years. He even barks constantly when I'm washing his bowl/making his food.
Sometimes it is understandable as he wants water or to go toilet. But other times there seems to be no apparent reason for it. As he is disabled (severe arthritis in back legs) he pretty much relies on me for everything. From putting his water bowl near him to taking him outside for toilet (I have to hold his tail to keep him from falling). He is on loxicom and stride for his legs. I think the loxicom is for pain. I also give him multivitamin tablets (doggie ones), have put him back on probiotics and now have bought pooch and mutt calming treats.
The treats seem to be helping a bit (he's sleeping longer). But it's still driving my partner and I insane. I'm going to try a long walk tomorrow with his wheelchair. Due to my own health issues and him disturbing my sleep with the whining / barking I've been unable to take him out as much as I should. I now feed him in the morning and evening as opposed to just the evening. This has helped a little too.
I love him dearly but I'm getting to the end of my tether. The stress is immense especially as I have other things going on in my life right now plus he I am having to monitor him for kidney disease as he has nodules in his kidneys that showed up on an ultrasound.
Does anyone know of safe natural remedies for calming dogs? I am planning to use tumeric for his legs soon too.

I am hoping it is not some kind of side effect from the prescription. But maybe double check the side effects (if any) and if it could be something like excitability. Dunno about that one
But what if all your care is having the desired effect. Could he be getting better and actually getting much more playful? Does he like to look at birds by chance? Possibly put out some bird seed so he can "see things." Kind of like turning on the tv. Just might entertain him more if something new was going on outside. Hopefully he is getting better and getting more energy. Sometimes if you give dogs a little time by themselves they calm down. Not really sure I can help though
He has been on those two for quite a while now but I will look up the side effects.
He doesn't take much interest in wildlife anymore. I rarely get birds in my garden anyway as they prefer my neighbours bird seed, lol.
I'm not noticing much change in his legs. He has lost weight though which is a good thing as he was overweight. But I hope that is just down to me putting him on a low fat diet and not something more sinister going on in his kidneys.
Weird that he barks so much for no apparent reason. I can only think pain or mental issues.
Maybe you can try that snugly calming jacket. Or, well, trying to find someone with a huge piece of land and the patience to deal with him... Although I guess it'd be easier to find him suddenly cured =(
Good about turmeric. It's pretty good for bone problems. I guess you already know the dosage. Watch out though because it's high on oxalate and it could cause kidney stones, particularly if he has a history. I wish there were more data on this, but I only know studies on humans =/
I hope longer walks/play-times does the trick and he can relax better.
"There is no hope. Knowing that humans die untimely, by the millions, simply makes me feel a bit better. If more than, say, 2000 were killed in one go, I could smile. 20000? I might throw a party..."

Lomedin: Learned by chance that Kat Von D is vegan. Didn't have a clue who she was before.

Vegan: I'm on an antinatilist group and only found out about her on that. Had no idea who she was before as never heard of her.
