I could not agree more. I know that some vegans do not believe in keeping companion animals, but the fact is that so many are out there without proper care. I would never consider buying an animal from a breeder, but I have my two rescued cats and our Battersea rescued dog and they are the most wonderful companions imaginable.
I cannot imagine contributing in any way towards the encouragment of 'pure' breeding. Most of these animals suffer from health issues due to inbreeding and some breeds suffer terribly, like the King Charles Spaniels, whose brains are too big for their skulls. I do, however, feel a responsibility toward the animals who through no fault of their own, end up stuck in shelters or starving in the streets. Three are all I can afford to keep and care for (insurance is expensive!) but if I could afford to rescue more, I would.
I don't think I could deal with feeding an animal meat. To me it's equivalent to saying that the animal you feed to your pet is less important than your companion animal. Which is why we do not have a cat presently.
Hi ecotribalvegan - I understand your point. I have consulted the vet and she told me that dogs can thrive on a vegan diet but as cats are obligate carnivores, her advice is to feed them meat. I don't want to buy meat for them, but I also don't want to ignore the plight of homeless cats. I've made my decision, but I can certainly understand yours, too.
Or you can walk outside and bring one home. That's how I got mine. Most animals though are so scared to come inside but mine were not. I guess cause they were young maybe. My cat latest Matt was on my a/c and all I had to do was call him and show him a plate of smelly cat food.
That's how I wound up with a lot of my animals. They always seem so grateful, somehow, when you take them in like that. I found my cat Persephone wandering around on a highway overpass; she was all skin and bones when we brought her home.
Now she follows me everywhere and sleeps at my side every night. She's the friendliest cat I've ever met. You can rub her belly, snuggle her like a stuffed animal, etc and she just soaks it all up. Far cry from the half-feral creature we brought home.
My gut feeling (I have also read some local papers all about the crime statistics/latest types of crime) and it is really just the feeling that people choose use coke...and stop caring about their pets and abandon them somewhere during their coke habit. It is really really sad but that is what I suspect is happening in my nearby city area. Obviously I hate (when I have noticed this type of thing) it but it is just a thought; like why can't someone just realize they don't want a pet, and just want to do other things with their money/lives and not care for a pet. I would hope that would actually be illegal somehow just to do that here so I wouldn't have to see the strays. Luckily I don't think there are that many in my neighborhood.

Lomedin: Learned by chance that Kat Von D is vegan. Didn't have a clue who she was before.

Vegan: I'm on an antinatilist group and only found out about her on that. Had no idea who she was before as never heard of her.

cybernaut: Well, it can be a little hard for me to come here sometimes because of how negative things can get here. I realize there's much to be negative about, but it's still hard for me all the same.
