So great to meet a fellow vegan anti-civer (and/or primitivist)! We're a bit of a rare breed.
The hunter turned vegan Kenneth Damro goes into the details comparing hunting methods, and he finds a great deal of suffering with earlier human hunting technology compared to gun hunting. Great book, A Northwoodsmans Guide To Everyday Compassion.
Have you checked out Layla Abdel Rahim?
Recently Which Side Podcast (vegan anarchist) has been on a roll with anti-civ guests. Zerzan, Ian, Layla, & I guested the last one. whichsidepodcast.com/ria-montana/
I hope one day our numbers get strong enough that we could somehow organize.
Would love to hear more of your story. If you have time & inclination, feel free to email me.
Re: leadership, I'm comfortable with earned, genuine authority. It's just the fake civ kind that totally turns me off. Just gotta be careful that a genuine authority figure doesn't become an idol, and that folks don't start idolizing.
Honestly, not a fan. Primitivism is a breeding ground for toxic and problematic views (especially about trans folk) not to mention frequent use of the naturalistic fallacy.
There are plenty of real workable ways to achieve a green, vegan, anarchist society without deconstructing civilization.
Seems to be a misunderstanding. Derrick Jensen and Leirre Keith run Deep Green Resistance, which is neither anti-civ nor primitive. They're just lefties. With his first couple books Derrick started out sounding kinda anti-civ, but after he teamed up with radfem (anti-trans) Keith, author of The Vegetarian Myth, they went straight toward mainstream.
I know nobody anti-civ or primitive who is trans.
in my opinion, anarchy cannot be achieved in any form of civilization, as civilization requires hierarchy.
Hi ria. I've never heard of the term you use to describe yourself. I used to call myself a primitivist, but I came across the term anti-civilizationist and sought out the difference between the two. I didn't do a whole lot of digging, but article I found suggested that primitivism is specifically about returning to sociocultural mores practiced by primitive humans, including rejecting (what I consider to be) neutral civilized practices. While I think that would be largely beneficial, I don't necessarily approve of any and all primitive sociocultural practices and I don't think that absolutely every aspect of civilization should be abandoned (in fact, I doubt that the latter is even possible).
The definition you gave above is what I understand anti-civilizationism to mean, and I now refer to myself as an anti-civilizationist (or anti-civ for short). I don't think of being anti-civ as directly related to my being an ethical vegan.
As for non-civilized peoples consumption of animal products, I'm not terribly concerned with it. I'm an ethical vegan because I oppose the imposition of unnecessary suffering on animals. As far as I know, non-civilized people do not typically gorge themselves on flesh, keep animals confined for long periods of time, practice animal husbandry, keep pets, or any other abusive practice. They take what they need without putting their prey through unnecessary suffering, like other natural predators. I'm sure there are some tribes that perhaps eat more flesh than they need at times or have some sort of ritual that results in suffering, but on the whole, they are nowhere near as abusive as civilized peoples. They simply do not have the technology for widespread abuse.
