What is your opinion on making pets (like cats and dogs) vegan? Personally.... i'm a little opposed to the idea. I can understand why humans would be vegan (we are biologically suited to having a complete veggie diet) but animals like cats and dogs... are pure carnivore. I'm not sure if it's right to do that to them.

You're wrong about the dogs: they're actually omnivores. Whisk has been fed a vegetarian diet since we adopted her and she has tonnes of energy and nice lean muscles.
Cats too could be argued are omnivores since they do occasionally eat plant matter (usually for digestion); even though it's a very minute amount. Even most commercial cat foods have plant products in them, which cats are able to digest.
If you choose to adopt (and I hope never buy) an animal, you are its guardian. Unless you take it to the store (and every store) and let it sample every food, you are equally guilty of forcing its dietary choices upon them. Again, dogs are omnivores and thrive quite well on a vegan diet. Cats, admittedly, need a little more supervision with their diet ensuring their pH levels are correct and nutrients - taurine in particular - are adequate for a healthy life.
it’s complicated, (and funny that the question was posted to on the one day in months i ventured to the board, and i ventured to the board because i received an email) but i am in bed with a horrid cough today, grab a cup of tea.......
i asked the board for peer reviewed articles which indicated cats would suffer no adverse events if fed a vegan diet. it is well documented in javma and other journals the adverse events to felines that do not eat raw meat. i was presented with a behavioral study regarding vegan cat “owners” but no feline nutritional study. during this discussion i was searching javma on my own
then there was a post about a historically vegan tribe on the sub-continent. i found it fascinating and searched for more information. i was unable to verify this one cited article written by a travel writer. i could find nothing on the history of these people that did not reference this one article.
when i posted my skepticism i was given excuses as to why it did not matter. the opposite of what i treated to with regards to living, breathing, flesh eating cats. i realized i was not with a group of reasonable like minded adults and ran away before i exploded. i have not read subsequent posts.
the one sad thing is someone had posted towards the end of last year about not knowing any vegans in real-life, i hope she has expanded her friends. i am blessed to live in a part of the world where eating flesh foods is not assumed, fresh vegan food is readily available and i know very few people that eat flesh foods. that is just the way it is.
so i suppose one could say i ran away rather than was chased away. i did not want to argue with people that already don’t eat other animals. however, everyone should remember that when you sound ridiculous to a meat eater, they stop listening. i have always tried to present reasoned and citable arguments to people that eat the same species as i have pets.
no, i believe i ultimately questioned their very existence, as i recall finding vegetarian tribes, however, no vegan tribes.
i was a bit concerned by your apparent racism and total acceptance of a closed society, i then realized part of the trouble was/is semantics and language. i think i also assumed you are quite young, and it is the privilege of the young to believe isolation is a way to achieve utopia.

Again catsandcows, contact vegan cat food manufacturers and get their nutritional testing standards. If you're correct, lobby the government to shut them down for advocating animal cruelty. Until then (which won't happen because cats can be fed a vegan diet if done properly), perhaps try exploring another avenue than condoning animal testing! You don't even sound like a vegan. Feeding your pets meat, demanding animal testing. I mean good grief.
ecotribalvegan: if you will kindly read the thread miss vegan posted. the vegan food companies do not test their food on animals. they test the foods nutrient quality. as we know from human food trials, this is not acceptable. you obviously do not understand animal testing for the benefit of the animal. it is my great hope you never have a companion with cancer or diabetes or any of the other horrid diseases we can now treat and offer our companions good quality of life. perhaps you think that is wrong, too.
blood samples can certainly be taken in the home. (my diabetic cat thought nothing of it.)
i will be attending acvim forum later this week, it will be interesting to see if any of the vegan food companies are represented. i will keep you posted. anyone out there go to ecvim? this is the largest specialty veterinary conference in the u.s. if there is information to be found, i will find it.

Lomedin: Learned by chance that Kat Von D is vegan. Didn't have a clue who she was before.

Vegan: I'm on an antinatilist group and only found out about her on that. Had no idea who she was before as never heard of her.
